Event description
A Pathway for Forming a Faith Community with Your Post-Christian Neighbors

About this event

Have you noticed that every year it seems like fewer and fewer people visit your church? About 60% of the US population is uninterested in formalized religion and yet interest in spirituality is growing. What if there was a way of reaching out to your spiritual but not religious neighbors that actually works? In this track of the Resilient Church Academy, we’ll walk through a process that has resulted in thousands of faith communities gathering with their post-Christian neighbors in North America and beyond.

DETAILS

  • Wednesdays from 11am-1pm Eastern
  • August 11 / 18 / 25
  • Presenter: Luke Edwards

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN

  • How to build a connection with people outside of church
  • How to listen to the Holy Spirit and to your Neighbors
  • How communities can grow into churches

SESSIONS

August 11 - Session 1: Getting Started

Faith communities that connect with post-Christian neighbors start with listening and loving people. When we reach out with open ears and open minds, we can shape a community that will meet people where they are and walk alongside them towards Jesus. In this session, we will explore ways to listen deeply to the Holy Spirit and to our neighbors. We will also explore how to love our neighbors by investing in existing relationships and building new ones.

August 18 - Session 2: Building a Jesus-Shaped Community

Faith communities that connect with post-Christian neighbors form a social community that can become a spiritual community. The people we reach out to are often not ready for a spiritual community but are eager for connection. In this session, we will talk about building a social community first, and how these social communities can become spiritual communities in a way that avoids dishonesty and manipulation.

August 24 - Session 3: Becoming a Church

Faith communities that connect with post-Christian neighbors gradually add elements of church. As opposed to a launch-Sunday where all the marks of church are present from the start, we can start with one or two elements (e.g. prayer, studying scripture, or communion) and over time add more elements until a complete picture of church is realized. In this session, we will explore the various elements of church and how a burgeoning spiritual community can become a church.
