Event description

Description

Join Free Street Theatre IN/HOUSE resident artist Quenna Lené Barrett in a series of participatory workshops exploring how “re-writing” and re-imagining the Declaration of Independence as a living document might
center the voices of many and truly defines us as a nation today.

Refreshments and gift cards as a token of thanks for your time! Co-programming for children available; please email the organizer if you need co-programming or have other accessibility needs.

Each workshop will cover different activities, so you're welcome to register for as many as you like! These workshops will be interactive and based in play and theatre activities.

  • Workshop 1, May 18: "On Belonging" - Knowing ourselves + each other through the lens of equality, justice, and belonging.
  • Workshop 2, May 19: "Understanding the Players" - Exploring characters affected by and perpetuating systems of injustice.
  • Workshop 3, May 25: "Imagining + Practicing Justice" - Exploring a vision for justice.
  • Workshop 4, May 26: "Re-Writing the Declaration" - A practice in creating the world we want to see.

CONTEXT + Other Information

This workshop series is part of a play-making process for a play currently titled Re-Writing the Declaration. Catalyzed by the current organizing energy of our country, while recently reading the Declaration of Independence I realized that America’s founding documents were never intended to include many of the people who call this country home today. The justice system doesn’t protect black and brown people for many reasons, one of which is because it wasn’t designed to. Because of these and other shortfalls, I want to rewrite the Declaration as an artistic, performative, and participatory rendering of a new and more inclusive Declaration. A major goal of the project is to host community workshops wherein participants help to inspire the play’s participatory actions that audience members will partake in, discuss and physically re-write versions of the actual
declaration, and make images, tableaux, and vignettes of when we feel we do and don’t belong in this country. The re-writings and images created will inform the content and some of the play’s structure.

This process will also serve as the focus of my thesis, and is considered research. To that end, we will have note takers, video and audio recording. Participants will sign consent forms or give verbal consent once onsite.
