Session 1: 9:00 am - 10:15 am
Keynote: Real-Life Research -- A great way to hook the GenZ students!
Presenter: Paige Jaeger, Educational Consultant
Description: In this webinar we will examine how to inspire students to dig deeply and care about research and "knowing more." The key is finding connections--direct connections and indirect. We will model both and give curriculum connected examples. Teachers and librarians can incubate a greater level of student ownership if we embrace a few easy design principals. Join us as we examine how to embrace current curriculum and student changes.
Session 2: 10:30 am - 11:30 am
Part 1: Coding? We Can Do That!
Presenter: Annette Lang
Description: Learn about coding free resources and some fun hands on "unplugged" coding activities.
Part 2: Boot up Student Learning with ISearch Local!
Presenter: Monica Williams-Mitchell, Librarian, Elder High School
Description: All INFOhio automated schools will start the 2016-17 school year with access to ISearch Local - the power of ISearch with your school library catalog built in. Keynote: Five Years in the Future: Maximizing Trends to Meet Your Students' Needs
Presenter: Miguel Figueroa, Director of the American Library Association's Center for the Future of Libraries
Description: School libraries are changing, becoming more innovative, collaborative and more hands-on. Keynote speaker, Miguel Figueroa, director of ALA's Center for the Future of Libraries, will discuss the current trends in libraries and how those trends are (and will) transforming libraries. Participants will then choose a trend and discuss what it could look like for the school library, students and teachers five years from now.
Session 4: 1:45 pm - 2:45 pm
Genius Hour in the Library
Presenter: Elizabeth Rush, Librarian, Nichols Elementary School, San Antonio, TX, and Emily Rozmus, INFOhio ILibrarian
Description: Genius Hour is “a movement in education that allows students to spend time in school exploring, researching and studying any topic of their choice.” Learn about one Texas librarian’s “disruptive innovation,” successfully implementing genius hour in her school, from getting administrator and faculty support for the project to establishing an environment that facilitates independent research and learning. Elizabeth Rush will share what worked exceptionally well and what she needed to adjust for year two and three. She will share her step-by-step approach and some of the most memorable student topics and projects.
Then see how IWonder's Genius Hour leads students through the inquiry process, introduces them to new online learning tools, and gives them the freedom to learn more about a topic that interests them! Find out how to implement this exercise in your classroom and get the best results for authentic, personalized student learning.
