RDJ Refugee Shelter is holding our inaugural cocktail reception, #ChangeTheNarrative, to highlight the positive contributions recent immigrants are making to the US economy and society. The program features a panel discussion about the rewards and challenges of being an immigrant entrepreneur.

Jordan Revees, Master of Ceremonies

Founder & Executive Director, VideoOut

VideoOut travels the country to amplify the voices of LGBTQIA+ people through storytelling. VideoOut believes that every story creates empathy, and that empathy can be wielded as a powerful tool for advocacy, awareness, and education. Jordan is a founding member of TED-Ed where he helped create content that has been viewed over a billion times online. After TED, Jordan worked for a number of nonprofits before starting VideoOut. So far, he has led efforts to collect 200 gorgeous stories.

Jillian Jensen

Community Advocate

Jillian Jensen works as community advocate for a women's candle collective of recently resettled women refugees. Most of the collective's candle makers are mothers and the sole provider for their children. 100% of the profits from the candles go back to the women candle artisans.

Sylvian Hyde (TJ)

Co-Founder Syvian Hyde Fashion

Sylvian Hyde Fasion was co-founded by Sylvian (TJ) Hyde and Jabari Chambers to inspire men to unearth their personal style with bespoke fashion featuring an eclectic color palate and contemporary masculine tailoring. TJ serves as the lead fashion designer behing Sylvian Hyde. TJ spent 11 months in immigration detention where he created his first designs, fashioning an artist’s palette from colored newspapers and water. He recieved political asylum in 2016 and started Sylvian Hyde Fashion in 2017.

KEYNOTE SPEAKER

Edafe Okporo, Executive Director, RDJ Refugee Shelter

RDJ is the only shelter in New York City that provides asylum seekers with housing assistance. More than just a place to stay, RDJ provides LGBTQ Asylum seekers and Refugees with support and community as they navigate the process of seeking asylum. Edafe recieved political asylum in 2017 and is the author of Bed 26: A Memoir of an African' Man's Asylum in the US and Edojah: Risking it All for Freedom.

This event is Donation based and ticket sales start at $75. All funds will go directly towards supporting refugees in New York city. Please R.S.V.P., and share widely!
