Seminar Title: Ears to Hear: Rabbi Jesus and His Parables

Seminar Description: It is common to find that Jesus’ followers of today view parables as simple stories told originally to a peasant people to make his point either simple or sometimes obscure. If we take that perspective we miss some of the most profound and challenging teaching in the Scripture.
Jesus came to a Jewish world that knew the Text intimately. His teaching style was similar to other rabbis who interpreted and applied the Scripture for their audiences. While Paul communicated to his Greek-speaking audience in a more Western style using propositions and logic, Jesus often taught using stories and concrete images reflecting the ancient Jewish way of communicating truth. Like other teachers – a practice less familiar to modern audiences, Jesus frequently used clever stories or parables to challenge his hearers not only to understand and believe his words but to obey them.
This seminar will focus on his use of parables for his Jewish hearers. We will hear a sample of these stories in their context seeking to gain new insights into his brilliant teaching and its application to our own lives today.

Seminar Preparation: Participants are encouraged to read Jesus’ parables from the Synoptic Gospels (Matthew, Mark and Luke).
