What is the Raspberry Pi?

The Raspberry Pi had started off as a $35 credit card sized computer posed to offer accessible computing to children. It has since evolved to an extremely popular computing platform to learn coding and electronics. In fact, computing has become so accessible, you can purchase a Raspberry Pi Zero for $5. The Raspberry Pi has a list of supported Linux based operating systems. Many larger companies have seen the potential for the Raspberry Pi and have developed their own software and hardware ( a Windows 10 OS was developed by Microsoft For example).

Why the Raspberry Pi?

The Raspberry Pi has exploded in popularity among not just students in STEM education but designers, engineers, and artists for a variety of applications. Having a computer under $35 allows open and accessible computing to a wide audience. If you have an interest in making automated / interactive projects, the Raspberry Pi is the perfect platform.

What can I do with a Raspberry Pi?

The list is endless. You could find so many projects online from programming your own computer games, to living room entertainment systems, interactive art projects, DIY weather monitoring or security systems, robotics projects using AI, Interactive lighting control systems, Halloween decorations, automated cat feeders, etc.

some examples can be found here: https://learn.adafruit.com/category/raspberry-pi

What Will I Learn in this Course?

This is a purely introductory course. You will learn the fundamental basics of setting up your Raspberry Pi and using the built in tools, including the Python programming environment.

  • Setting up the Raspberry Pi
  • Navigating the OS
  • useful software for your Raspberry Pi
  • working with Terminal and scripting
  • understanding the GPIO pins / blinking an LED
  • using Python to program
  • installating Python Modules
  • brief look at Arduino and Processing on the Pi

Who is the Instructor?

My Name is Daniel Bertner and I have been working with coding and electronics platforms such as Raspberry Pi and Arduino for nearly a decade.

I have put together permanent installations for galleries, museums and personal art installations locally and internationally.

You can see a portfolio of my work at https://danbertner.com

Materials List

I will have materials on hand to demo all of the lessons and examples. You are NOT required to purchase, but if you would like your own materials, here is the list :

  • A Windows, Mac or Linux laptop. ( I will be working on a Mac, so that is preferred but not required)
  • A Raspberry Pi W essential Kit (link)
  • A USB 2.0 to Ethernet adaptor (link)
  • an usb to SD card reader if your computer doesn’t have a built in reader (link)
