Volunteer at Raphael House Corporate and Community Chefs Night with Harvard Kennedy School SF alum

About this Event

Corporate & Community Chefs

Raphael House Corporate & Community Chefs Nights are open to groups of up to 6 volunteers and run from 3:30 pm - 7 pm every Monday and Thursday. Volunteers must be ages 13+, and all minors under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

We begin the volunteer evening with a tour of Raphael House. These volunteer groups help the chefs in our kitchen prepare a warm and delicious meal for the families that live at Raphael House. Volunteers will help with anything from assembling salads and chopping vegetables to rolling up enchiladas and making guacamole. Since our trained chefs will be supervising and guiding volunteers, there are no cooking skills required to participate. Our chef will provide aprons and lead the group in preparing dinner and cleaning up the dining room to prepare for the meal. Cleaning activities can include: wiping down tables, fixing place settings, sweeping the floors.

Dinner begins at 5:45 pm for the families and meals are served family-style. Volunteers will serve dinner to residents on family-style platters and will be available to help serve beverages, provide condiments, or serve second helpings if needed. Volunteers may also be asked to help with a minimal amount of clean-up after dinner including helping with the dishes. Volunteers will have an opportunity to eat once dinner time has ended for Raphael House families. We serve our meals family style so volunteers will help bring plates of food out to each family's table and serve second helpings.

WHAT TO WEAR & SAFETY POLICIES

For hygiene purposes, everyone will be asked to wear a hairnet (provided by RH), but those with short (or pinned up) hair may bring a baseball cap to wear as an alternative. For safety, closed-toe shoes and long pants are required at all times for all kitchen volunteers. Federal health and safety regulations now also require the following for all kitchen staff and volunteers:

-Gum chewing policy: there is to be no chewing of gum in the kitchen or dining room area.

-Volunteers under 18 are not allowed to use the Hobart mixing machine.

-Volunteers under 18 may only use the stove or oven with the help and supervision of an adult.

-Volunteers under 18 are not allowed to use machinery with a sharp edge.
