RANI ARBO & DAISY MAYHEM

It's the pairing tonight of two phenomenal artists that has us wowed. Rani Arbo & daisy mayhem are hometown favorites and label darlings at Signature Sounds. When we asked if they'd consider doing a Parlor Session* they said they might consider it if they could invite a musician they love -- clarinetist Anna Patton.

Harmony, rhythm, indelible songs – these are the hallmarks of Rani Arbo & daisy mayhem, the New England-based folk quartet now in its 17th year. From the Newport Folk Festival to the California World Music Festival and beyond, this band’s steadfast brew of wit, camaraderie, and musicality leaves audiences everywhere humming and hopeful, spirits renewed.

Rani Arbo & daisy mayhem are Rani Arbo (fiddle, guitar), Andrew Kinsey (bass, banjo, ukulele), Anand Nayak (electric and acoustic guitars) and Scott Kessel (percussion). At the helm, Arbo is “blessed with an unmistakable voice, both light and sultry, with a hint of tremolo and smoke” (Acoustic Guitar). With Kinsey and Nayak’s vibrant baritones and Kessel’s resonant bass, the band’s signature lockstep harmonies can shake the rafters or hush the room. Arbo’s fiddle is sweet and sinewy, while Nayak’s guitar stretches across genre lines. Kinsey’s old- time bass anchors the deep groove of Kessel’s homemade percussion kit — a truly funky collection of cardboard boxes, tin cans, caulk tubes, packing-tape tambourines, bottle-cap rattles, Mongolian jaw harps, and a vinyl suitcase.

ANNA PATTON

Anna Patton plays clarinet with great verve, clarity, and harmonic whim, drawing on a richly eclectic musical background of jazz, classical, traditional, and world music. Based in Brattleboro, VT, she performs full time for dances and concerts, composes and arranges music, and teaches ear training and swing harmony singing.

Anna’s current projects include playing dance music with bands such as Elixir and The Figments, string-band and vocal swing with Housetop, Brazilian and gypsy jazz gigs with The Will Patton Ensemble, and improvisatory Balkan/ African/ South American influenced originals with the As Yet Quintet. Her solo album, Isadore’s Breakfast – featuring her work on clarinet and vocals along with many of Vermont’s finest musicians – is a mix of French-influenced swing and fiddle tunes.

You never know what will happen on a night when all these artists meet on stage for the first time ...

ABOUT THE PARLOR SESSIONS

On assorted winter Sundays, we welcome American roots musicians into the Parlor Room for a concert, a break for hot soup, and an all-comers' jam. So bring your instrument with you. These Parlor Sessions are our antidote to the dark of winter. They're a little like home, if home is a houseful of wicked great musicians. The Parlor Sessions are sponsored by Goat Peak Strings, the Easthampton shop with rare, vintage, and handmade instruments; and with generous donations from Captain Jack's Roadside Shack, Bread Euphoria, Hungry Ghost, and Florence Pie Bar.
