Event description

Description

This workshop is a rare opportunity to spend time with renowned ceramic artist, Randy Johnston. In this demo-only workshop, Randy will be making traditional pottery with a focus on ideas involved in making functional ware. He’ll cover use of the wheel and the construction of forms by altering pieces, using slabs and paper patterns. There will be lots of discussion about his work and its relationship to contemporary ceramics. Randy will lecture about historical and contemporary ceramic work, show personal images of his time in Japan and photos of his and his wife Jan’s studio and kilns.

After four years of study with Warren MacKenzie, Randy established and has maintained a studio in River Falls Wisconsin since 1972. He has an MFA from Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville. Randy apprenticed with living national treasure Tatsuzo Shimaoka of Mashiko, Japan in 1975. His work has been included in scores of exhibitions and publications in the US and abroad. Randy is a teacher, mentor and continues to serve as a role model for many aspiring artists working in clay.
