Join RIPA's Literary Group to read "Vesper Flights" Online Group

About this Event

Join the Randall's Island Literary Group as we read Helen Macdonald’s Vesper Flights (Grove Press, New York, 2020). The group will discuss the book and guests will be included to link her reflections on nature with the birds and wildlife found on Randall’s Island.

Elizabeth Howard in conversation with poet, writer and educator Arisa White around Helen Macdonald's Vesper Flights

Arisa White's new poetic memoir, Who's Your Daddy, allows psychological insights into absence, loss, love, identity, and healing as a kind of "love repair." Helen Macdonald, through her writing does the same through the lens of the natural world. In this conversation Arisa will consider how nature has influenced her writing.

"I aspire to write in such a way similar to the feeling of approaching an ocean—or some massive body of water—that takes your breath away. You feel small and everything, it cleanses and you contemplate, and always the possibility the horizon grants." –– interview, Adroit Journal

Arisa White is a Cave Canem fellow and an assistant professor of creative writing at Colby College. She is the author of four books, including the poetry collection You’re the Most Beautiful Thing That Happened, and coauthor of Biddy Mason Speaks Up, winner of the Maine Literary Book Award for Young People’s Literature and the Nautilus Book Award Gold Medal for Middle- Grade Nonfiction. She serves on the board of directors for Foglifter and Nomadic Press. Find her at (Photo: Nye Lyn Tho)

LitClub Session Three:

Speaker: Steve Burnett After a career in marketing and design I built a farm from scratch. This is its 15th year. Organic, vegetables, cattle, pigs, poultry, fruits and berries. It’s a mountain farm in the Catskills. You can think of it much as you would a farm of 150 years ago except for the electric, diesel and plastic. We produce and preserve most of what our life needs. I also do art, have a radio show and do as much community work as I can. I have two daughters and a wife who keeps it real.

Speaker: Ciara Sidell Ciara is a lifelong New Yorker, committed to growing food in educational spaces in New York City. She has farmed at the Queens County Farm Museum, taught on the Brooklyn Grange rooftop farms, managed Harlem Grown’s network of twelve agriculture facilities (youth community farms, hydroponic greenhouses, school gardens, & compost processing sites), and has for the past two years, managed the Randall’s Island Park Alliance’s Urban Farm – an educational farm, designed completely with teaching and learning in mind. She is endlessly interested in engaging folks in learning and discussion around the intersections of farming, justice, sustainability, and our urban landscape. Outside of farming, she enjoys non-competitive team sports, and gets her adrenaline fix from biking on city streets.
