JANUARY Topic Development
January is International Creativity Month! Come out and share your creativity as we brainstorm during the first meeting of 2013! Participants will have an opportunity to share their thoughts and ideas of what topics will be discussed this year. Please come share your thoughts!
FEBRUARY Birth Family Connections
As foster/adoptive parents, it is important to be knowledgeable about birth family connections. This training will cover several topics including some helpful ways to prepare your child for birth family visits; managing difficult behaviors after birth family visits; and ways for you as a parent to cope with mandatory birth family visits and phone calls.
MARCH Transracial Adoption
Deciding to adopt transracially presents many rewards and challenges. One particular challenge can come from children already living in the home. This training will focus on helping children cope with transracial adoption. Particular emphasis will be placed on helping siblings adjust to transracial adoptions.
APRIL Parenting Strategies
Parenting foster/adoptive children presents many unique challenges. Parenting children mental health diagnoses such as ADD/ADHD, ODD, and CD among others can present additional challenges. Come out and learn some tips and strategies for parenting children with mental health diagnoses. Dealing with severe teenage behaviors will also be addressed.
MAY Therapeutic Foster Parenting
Children needing foster care come from a variety of circumstances and experiences in their lives, but have a common need for temporary care outside their permanent residence. This training will focus on strategies and attitudes that will enhance a parent’s confidence and ability to handle challenging behaviors. Our special guest speaker for the evening will be our very own Trudy Robinson!
JUNE Self Care
You devote time and energy into your foster/adopted children all year. Not to mention work, family, friends, and other life demands take their toll on you all year. Stop! Relax! Take a break! Come out and learn some helpful ways to take care of yourself, now and all year long!
JULY Popcorn & Movie Night!
Come out for a time together to eat popcorn, watch a movie, and just have FUUUUNNNN!!!!
AUGUST Preparing Your Foster Child for Adoption
Fostering and adopting are two related but different types of parenting. Fostering is temporary while adoption is permanent. Transitioning your family from a foster family to an adoptive family can be an extremely rewarding yet challenging change, especially for your foster soon-to-be adopted child. Come out and learn some helpful ways to prepare your child for the transition.
SEPTEMBER Adoption Challenges
Has your foster/adopted child ever pushed your buttons? Has your foster/adopted child ever tested the limits and boundaries you set? Has your foster/adopted child ever been fine one minute then sad or angry the next? Welcome to the rewards…and challenges for foster/adoptive parenting. Come out and learn how to deal with having your buttons pushed and how to recognize your child’s emotional triggers.
OCTOBER Birth/Adoptive Sibling Bonding
It is important for adoptive children to bond to their adoptive parents. It is also important for adoptive children to bond to their adoptive siblings. This training will focus on helping adoptive siblings bond. Sibling rivalry will also be addressed.
NOVEMBER Positive Reinforcement
Everyone loves being rewarded! Come out for some Thanksgiving food and a brief overview of how to reward appropriate behavior with positive reinforcement!
DECEMBER Holiday Party
Come and celebrate the Christmas Holiday with us! PARTY!!!!!PARTY!!!!!PARTY!!!!!
