Michael Wharton has trained hundreds of project managers over the years and find the many project manages struggle with using Project Professional. The reason for this is most project managers used Excel for managing projects and when switching to project professional they brought many bad habits with them. This seminar makes you aware of these bad habits and shows you the proper way of building a project schedule that works for you.
This 1.5 hour seminar is designed to show go over how applying Excel habits into your project schedule makes it hard to manage project. The overall goal of the seminar is to break those habits and show you the right way to create a dynamic schedule.

The “Making Project Schedules Work for You” seminar is designed for people who are using MS Project regularly, even if this is as often as a day-to-day basis: project schedulers, project team members, project managers, project controllers, project control officers, and project engineers.

- Be able to create a valid and dynamic model of your project to forecast it
- Be aware of the best practices of scheduling with MS Project
- Know how to efficiently update the schedule during project execution to continuously forecast the project end date and cost

- If you want to follow along, bring computer loaded with Project 2010 or Project 2013 Standard or Professional edition. The seminar demo will be using Project 2010. Those using Project 2013 will have a slightly different ribbon, but should still be able to follow along.
The Principle of Forecast Scheduling: creating a schedule in such a way that it continually forecasts the project.
Review on efficiently entering data into MS Project
- Working with the ribbon and the quick access toolbar
- Options: relevant options before entering data
- Manually scheduled tasks and when to use them
- Creating the Work Breakdown Structure and fleshing it out to detail tasks
- Finding the right level of detail
- Fixed Duration, Fixed Units and Fixed Work tasks and when to use each type of task
- A process for estimating
- Estimating durations or work (effort) and the task types: Fixed Duration, Fixed units and Fixed Work
- Difficulties in estimating and solutions
- Dependencies and the network logic:
- The principle of dynamic schedules that saves you time
- Using dependencies to model cause and effect in the project
- Types of dependencies and when to use each type
- How to check the completeness and the correctness of the network logic
- Deadlines (target dates): how deadlines support dynamic schedules
- Schedule Constraints (fixed dates): types of schedule constraints and how they make your schedule rigid

Michael Wharton is a Project/SharePoint Consultant and Trainer. Michael’s career started as a software developer before moving into project management. His passion to improve project management processes begin in 2003 using tools like project professional and server. Since then he has trained hundreds of project managers and implemented project server in over twenty-five PMOs. He has passed over forty Microsoft certification exams giving him a solid technical background with Project and SharePoint Server.
Michael is active in the community. He is the past President-Elect and past Director of Programs for the NC Piedmont PMI, board member of the Triad SQL Server User Group, Triad Developers Guild and Enterprise Architect Roundtable. He is currently writing a book about implementing Portfolio Management using Project Server 2013.
