Raisins in a Glass of Milk
Event Information
About this event
Raisins in a Glass of Milk is an annual play series based on interviews done with artists of color initially developed in Seattle, WA. The mission is to be a catalyst for the conversation about how white supremacy affects the way we make art, which ultimately affects how we live our lives. We believe that People of Color are a standard, essential part of storytelling and we will continue making sacred space for People of Color to tell their stories until the rest of the world is ready to do the same.
This year’s production of Raisins 2021 will rehearse at/be presented live by Renegade Theater Company. It is a new work and features all Black stories told by an all Black cast. Co-Creator Maya Burton talks about the inspiration for Raisins 2021 below:
“For generations, art and media have only been produced and consumed through a white lens. Often when we do see Black people included, the image is so watered down and whitewashed we, as a society, have come to believe that the Black experience is something that can be brushed off as a one-dimensional stereotype. Now, Black Artists are taking the canvas, the floor, the page, the stage, and the mic back. Since our start in 2016, we have worked to make a sacred space for all POC to share their stories. This year we are bringing Black people downstage center. The Black experience is multicultural, wide-ranging, and unique to each individual and yet as Black People, it sometimes feels as if we all grew up on the same street. Raisins 2021 invites Black Artists to share with our audiences what it means to choose art during these current times of revolution and rebirth while discovering yourself within the community and the community within yourself.”
