RE:Raising Kings 2019 Partnership

Dear Community Partner,

Raising Kings 2019 once again kicks off during National Mentoring Month on January 21st, Martin Luther King Day. This year-round initiative began eight years ago inside of the Ferris School For Boys and has continued with year-round programming since. Today, the number of youth incarcerated as well as juvenile crime is at the lowest numbers in the last 10 years. Our donors and partners have meant so much in honoring the legacy of Dr. King most recently helping us recruit 130 new mentors, engage 165 boys in meaningful mentor activity throughout the year, and raise $38,000 to sustain our year round work to change the outcomes for our boys. What we're doing is working but we have to keep going...

As a small, grass roots organization, we rely on your support... Raising KINGS is a collaborative commitment to change the prominent image and expectations of African American males by elevating the level of positive male engagement in the lives of boys. Our impact continues year-round beginning in January with Raising Kings 2019. Join more than 600 men, boys and community members for a full schedule of inspiring narratives, thought provoking presentations, and courageous conversations.

As we look at where we are today as a nation, it’s clear that mere social gatherings are not enough. Recently, the C.D.C. came to Wilmington to explore the public health issues claiming the lives of young black males. “Our investigation was not focused on the mechanism of injury, but rather the opportunities to intervene on more root causes of violence such as prior exposure to violence, family disruption and limited educational attainment.” Courtney Lenard, CDC Epidemic Intelligence The New York Times.

▲ Wilmington consistently ranks in the top five most violent cities in the country.
▲ During this record breaking 2017, 197 shooting victims have been reported. The highest rate of victims were Black males…
▲ 85% of African American youth in Wilmington are growing up without an adult male in the home.
▲ 87% of incarcerated black males report being raised in a fatherless home.
▲ Delaware has the highest prison population per capita in the entire world. 87% nonviolent offenders incarcerated are black males.
▲ In just one year, 4,303 juveniles were arrested in DE. 71.8% were African-American.
▲ Last school year (2017-18) the DOE reports 44,828 school suspensions (16,457 different students). 46 were expelled.

“History will have to record that the greatest tragedy of this period of social transition was not the strident clamor of the bad people, but the appalling silence of the good people.” Dr. Martin Luther Kings

The time to do something - to not remain silent - is right now. Raising Kings is a year-round, high impact opportunity that connects our highest needs youth with positive male mentors, role models and fathers. Since starting at Ferris Our goal is to secure 100 new mentor commitments and the financial resources to support this initiative year-round in schools and community sites. With your continued support in 2019, we can continue to raise the next generation of Dr. King-like leadership and empower our children to begin living "the Dream"!

Please review the enclosed “Partnership Impact Form” and give us a call to discuss these and other meaningful ways you might lend your time and talent to support our work. We look forward to hearing from you very soon!
Together WE are “the village”.
