Event description
Learn what it takes to successfully raise poultry in your own backyard!

About this Event

Whether for meat, eggs, or pets, raising your own poultry can be fun and easy! In this class, participants will learn what it takes to successfully raise a flock. Learn how to care for your birds’ basic needs and discuss different styles of coops that look good as well as provide comfort and protection. Topics will include poultry well-being and at-home remedies for common illnesses and injuries. Class includes a hands-on section which will consider different equipment, feed, and supplements and compare their pros and cons.

While this class will mainly focus on raising chickens, we will share some of the special requirements for raising other common fowl including ducks, geese, and turkeys. If there is time, we will discuss some of the characteristics of specific breeds so you can determine what is best for your flock.

Sal and Joe are in their third year of running Roosterhaven, a sustainable farm specializing in produce, perennial fruits, and poultry. They market their crops at local farmers’ markets, through a small CSA, and through retail sales on the farm. They have over eight years of experience raising chickens and have also raised ducks and geese. They operate a micro-egg route and also provide custom slaughtering services to friends with small flocks of meat birds. The poultry they eat never leaves the farm: from chick to pastured adult to butcher and the freezer, they handle every aspect of their home-grown poultry.

Their dedication to sustainably raising food includes a commitment to deeply respecting what they will ultimately eat, whether plant or animal. This informs their animal welfare practices: birds are raised on pasture, where they are able to engage in all of their natural behaviors of foraging, dustbathing, and socializing. Sal and Joe currently raise chickens and ducks for meat and eggs, and are debating whether to add turkeys, guinea fowl, or pea fowl to the flock this season.
