This is a single session class on the basics of how to raise and house a small flock of backyard chickens for eggs and meat. Information on feeding, housing, and flock behavior.

We advocate against coops and runs, and will show you how to implement a paddock shift system to reduce feed costs and increase quality of life for your chickens

Every class we offer is by donation, no one will be turned away for inability to pay. Our classes include hands on demonstrations and the all of the materials you will need to use this information at home. Our instructor and farmer, Nick Milan, is a permaculture designer and brings deep knowledge coupled with clear simple explanations for students of all experience levels.

  1. Handling live birds

  2. Evaluating chicken pasture

  3. Diy Feeder and waterer

  4. Setting up Paddocks

You Take Home:

  • Laying Hens*

  • Portable Coop

  • Organic Layer Feed

  • Grit and Oyster Shell

  • Waterer

  • Feeder

Materials for the class will cost us $125 per student including labor, please consider donating more if you can, to cover someone else who cannot afford to do so. Donations can be made via PayPal to, on our facebook page via the "donate" button, by phone at 562-607-2793, or by mail/in person at 8425 E 42nd St., Indianapolis, IN 46226. Selecting a "General Admission" ticket on this site will reserve your spot until you make your donation (if possible). Once those are sold out, we will track a witing list via this site. *Live animals will be released upon site approval only, please bring photos or plan a site visit with our farm manager.


Who can attend this class?

This class is suitable for all! No experience required. More experienced hen keeps welcome as well.

What's the refund policy?

We can refund any donations for cancellation, minus fees, up to 10 days before the event.

Do I have to bring my printed ticket to the event?

No. Your registration via eventbrite will be enough!

Is it ok if the name on my ticket or registration doesn't match the person who attends?

Yes. If you plan to donate for a ticket for someone else, please email us their name and contact info if possible.
