While jazz was born in New Orleans, it was raised in Chicago.
Highlighting some famous (and infamous) homes, clubs and dance halls of the Chicago jazz scene from the early to mid-20th Century, we take a look at how the Windy City became the major center of jazz during the music's most vital period.
The tour starts downtown at the legendary Jazz Showcase, travels to the famous Bronzeville neighborhood on Chicago’s South Side, and later makes it way to the historic North Side neighborhood of Uptown. In between, we stop at the site of a modern jazz institution for a drink.
Along the way, a soundtrack of jazz standards and local pioneers will illustrate the “Chicago Style,” including its groundbreaking emphasis on solos. To commemorate this crucial influence, we visit the former home of Louis Armstrong, who pioneered and recorded the first improvised solo and scat singing.
The tour concludes at the Green Mill, Chicago oldest club, where you are invited to stay or return by bus to Jazz Showcase. Both clubs, the city's two premiere jazz venues, host live jazz on Sunday nights.
Please arrive 15 minutes before the tour starts. Bus leaves from Bar Louie, 47 W. Polk St., where food and alcohol are available. The bus cannot wait for late arrivals.
