Description

Social justice and human rights: Creating a fairer world

Humans are truly amazing. Innovative, creative and resourceful, we've had more technological developments over the last 200 years than in the last 5000. Almost everyone today has heard of driverless cars and artifical intelligence robots, even if we don't completely understand how they work. However, one issue that we do understand, yet still struggle to have on a global scale, is human dignity. How are we still living in a world where 21 million people are in slavery? Where, even in the UK, the cost of a court transcription in a justice trial costs a vulnerable prisoner £20,000? We are progressing towards deep social change and now your experience and skills can help.

The most powerful impact happens in person

The Rainmaker Campfire was conceptualised as a space where brilliant minds gather together to spark meaningful change: helping two charities turn some of their greatest challenges into exciting opportunities.

Why campfires? Humans have been rallying around campfires for millennia. They have provided not just warmth, light, and sustenance, but also bore opportunities for collaboration capable of making their experience of life richer and more meaningful.

Although our Campfires are metaphorical, they share the same focus on collaboration and harnessing collective wisdom. For each Campfire we bring together a carefully selected panel of talented entrepreneurs, visionary philanthropists, and impact leaders for an inspiring, and deeply meaningful session.

We are now inviting you to be part of this, bringing your wealth of skills and experience to help the charities in this year’s Rainmaker Accelerator programme drive positive change. Simply RSVP and we’ll confirm your place.

Charities Presenting on the 12th December

Anti-Slavery International

Founded in 1839, Anti-Slavery International is the oldest international human rights organisation in the world, challenging all forms of modern slavery.

Anti-Slavery International works across all stages of the process: helping people in slavery and their communities become empowered to assert and claim their rights: encouraging those who benefit from slavery to adopt new social norms; and using their experience to guide governments and businesses to develop legal and policy frameworks that protect people from contemporary slavery.

Current projects include: working to end forced child begging in Senegal; protecting child domestic workers from exploitation in Tanzania; working to end debt bondage in the brick kilns in India; campaigning to protect victims of slavery in the UK; working with business to end slavery in supply chains, to name just a few. In the 2015/2016 financial year they reached 96,538 people across their projects.

Just Transcription

Just Transcription is a social enterprise committed to harnessing the power of new technology to increase access to justice.

Just Transcription emerged as the founders repeatedly experienced the difficulty of accessing transcripts due to the complexity and cost of this process. However, for criminal appeals and miscarriages of justice, transcripts are absolutely key.

At the heart of Just Transcription’s work is the challenge of making court transcripts accessible to everyone, but the problem also has a larger scope: there is a powerful movement underway to move more of the justice system online. Just Transcription has a role both as a solutions developer and as an advocate and advisor in relation to system design, use of technology, open data and access to justice.
