Rainbow Manga: LGBT Identity in Japanese Comic Art

Bara, the Japanese word for "rose," is a genre of manga and art for gay and bisexual men, usually created by gay or bisexual men; Yuri ('lily') refers in Japanese media to same-sex romance between women. For this event two presenters will discuss the history of LGBT manga and its impact in Japanese society.
Erica Friedman is a former publisher of lesbian-themed Japanese comics. She has written about Yuri, for Japanese journal Eureka, the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund and she reviews Yuri anime, manga and related media on her blog Okazu.
Anne Ishii is a writer, producer, editor, and translator based in New York City. She has translated over 20 manga titles, including "Loups Garous" by Natsuhiko Kyogoku, and "Detroit Metal City." She runs Massive Goods, which introduces gay Japanese manga and related items for English-speaking fans.
