Event description

Description

Grab a beer and raise funds to honor LGBTQ heroines and heroes at the same time! Join the Rainbow Honor Walk (www.rainbowhonorwalk.org) at America’s oldest continuously operating gay bar, The White Horse, for a Beer Bust honoring Major League baseball’s FIRST, openly gay player, Glenn Burke, one of our next 24 honorees on the Rainbow Honor Walk. There will be ballpark style food, including hot dogs, nachos, peanuts, popcorn, etc. Bring cash for our raffle with fabulous prizes including tickets for the Oakland A's, Glenn Burke baseball cards, a Glenn Burke Biography and more. DJ Lifeline will be playing all your favorite music.

Admission can be purchased through this Eventbrite page or purchased at the door. As a donation to the non-profit Rainbow Honor Walk, all monies are tax deductible to the full extent of the law.

Glenn Burke played with both the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Oakland A's from 1976-1979. He was also the creator of the "high five", in 1977. Faced with much adversity due to his homosexuality, Burke was proud of his accomplishment, stating, "They can't ever say now that a gay man can't play in the majors, because I'm a gay man and I made it." At 27 years old he left his career and sadly, later died of complications due to AIDS in 1995. The Rainbow Honor Walk is a 503(c) non-profit organization that recognizes the historical importance of sexually diverse people, who have made a significant impact in history. Currently, 20 bronze sidewalk plaques have been installed in the Castro neighborhood in San Francisco. An all volunteer organization, the Rainbow Honor Walk receives no public funds or tax dollars. All monies raised go to produce, install and maintain the 3 foot x 3 foot bronze sidewalk plaques honoring our LGBTQ heroines and heroes.
