Description

Rain Water in Your Back Yard: Native Plants for Soggy Spots, Drainage, and Erosion Control

Do you have soggy spots, drainage problems, or erosion in your yard? Do you also like flowers and butterflies? Then join us to learn how to choose native plants for water smart landscaping. Control and conserve water in your yard while also creating beautiful habitat for butterflies and pollinators.

This presentation will include:

  • Plant adaptations for wet and dry conditions
  • Analyzing moisture and drainage conditions in your yard
  • Managing water movement through your landscape
  • Improving soil to help infiltration and hold moisture
  • Picking plants for soggy spots, drainage, and erosion

Presenters:
Stephen VanRhein, MDC Community Conservation Planner. MDC’s friendly, outgoing, and vivacious native plant diplomat who grooves on helping homeowners improve landscaping and restore habitat with KC’s outstanding native plants. He is also a pollinator whisperer who talks to butterflies and bees.

David Dods, Environmental engineer and landscape restoration geek. During the day he uses plants and landscaping to clean up hazardous waste sites. In his spare time he teaches people how to manage and conserve stormwater. If you have hazardous waste in your back yard, he can help with that too.

All proceeds support KCNPI's mission to promote more native landscapes in the Kansas City region. However, we never want cost to be a barrier, so scholarships are available. Email kcnpi (at) kcnpi.org to inquire.

Photographs and video may be taken. Registration and attendance constitutes an agreement by the registrant to KCNPI's use and distribution—both now and in the future—of the attendee’s image, videotapes, and electronic reproductions.
