Event description

Description

Come join us on 2019 Orca Recovery Day to plant out our rain gardens and capture harmful, polluting stormwater. Because of Kent's increased urbanization, Mill Creek has experienced high amounts of stormwater-related flooding over the past years. Mill Creek connects to the Green River/Duamish and ultimately Puget Sound, carrying pollutants from the city and depositing them directly into Orca and salmon habitat. You can be a part of the solution by helping us to plant our recently constructed rain gardens, increasing their ability to capture pollutants, alleviate local flooding issues, and reduce the contamination Orcas are subjected to. We will also be restoring a hillside with native species to reduce erosion and sedimention of our local streams and rivers.

Close-Toed Shoes and Long Pants are required to volunteer!

We will provide:

  • Tools
  • Gloves
  • Eye protection
  • Water Refilling Station
  • Snacks

You should bring:

  • Weather appropriate clothing
  • Refillable water bottle
  • Gloves (if you have a pair please bring them)

The Paradise Parking Plots community garden was an underused parking lot that we have transformed into a garden with 50 plots. It is a place where refugees, immigrants and local community members can gather to grow culturally appropriate foods that promote a healthier lifestyle, improve food access, foster economic independence, and build community. We look forward to your help in continuing to build and improve the space!
