Event Details

This is a free Ruby programming workshop for women and their friends.  We will cover the basics of Ruby syntax and tools, and it’ll be the foundation for our Winter workshop (date TBD), where we'll introduce Rails.

Friday, September 19th, 7PM - 9PM

Saturday, September 20th, 9:30AM - 5PM

What will I learn?

The workshop will teach programming with the Ruby language. By the end of the workshop, you'll have learned basic Ruby syntax and written a small program.

Over the course of the workshop, we'll cover:

  • The tools a Ruby developer uses

  • Basic Ruby syntax

  • How to run Ruby code interactively (irb) and from a file

  • How to create a basic Ruby program

  • The workshop will teach you the foundations of Ruby and equip you with the tools you need to continue learning.

Do I have to attend both days?

On Friday night we meet one another and install all of the software you need for the workshop.

Saturday will be spent learning and writing code. Attendance at the Installfest is mandatory if you want to participate Saturday.

Who should attend?

Total programming novices, web designers, system administrators, and developers of other languages are welcome to attend.

This workshop is intended to reach out to those who identify as women and are new to Ruby and programming. However, men are also welcome to attend if they attend as a guest of a woman registered for the event.

There is no age restriction, but we recommend that if you're under 18 and would like to attend, please bring an adult.

Parents: If you cannot find a babysitter for that weekend, we can provide free backup childcare through Parents in a Pinch. A huge thanks to thoughtbot for this opportunity!

What if I already know how to program?

The workshop is a mix of lectures and hands-on exercises done at your own pace.  There are extra credit questions, and we accommodate tricky questions as much as we can during lab times. Some experienced people enjoy it as a directed study, others find it too slow.

If it's too basic for your needs, we recommend working through a tutorial and attending a Boston Ruby Project Night for setup help and questions.

What should I bring?

  • Your laptop. If it's a borrowed or work laptop, make sure you're allowed to install software on it.

  • Power cord for your laptop.

Will there be food?

We will provide dinner on Friday and breakfast and lunch on Saturday.

We will also celebrate the conclusion of the workshop with appetizers and drinks (both alcoholic and non-alcoholic) at a nearby restaurant.

A huge thanks to our sponsors for supporting our workshop! With their help, we're able to provide food, drinks, a venue, and more all at no cost to our participants and volunteers.
