Description

Tenants stick together to win victory in Burien!

Tesa Rabbat and Anne Slater, tenants at the Hallmark apartments in Burien, will relate how they organized with their neighbors to stop a mass economic eviction at their 52-unit apartment complex last month. Faced with abrupt rent increases of up to 84% after a new owner purchased their aging complex, neighbors came together and negotiated concessions from the landlord that lowered the rent increases for up to a year and empowered tenants to have some control over their living conditions. These dynamic, grassroots women organizers will explain how they brought together very diverse neighbors, of many colors, nationalities, generations and abilities, to win this victory. They are eager to share ideas on how other renters in this region can unite to resist massive rent increases and displacement.

Hearty dinner, with vegan options, served at 6:30pm for $8.50
