The 8 Elements™ Approach Overview
The 8 Elements™ is a process-based approach developed by Rachel Brice. It is rooted in Tribal Fusion, American Tribal and American Cabaret belly dance styles, other contemporary and ethnic dance forms, and Viniyoga™.
The 8 Elements™ is a multi-phase training designed to impart a strong, creative and dynamic foundation to one’s belly dance practice, and as a way to complement and converse with the many belly dance styles. The intention of this approach is not to teach a set style of belly dance, but to explore the underlying architecture of many dance styles, honoring traditions, while encouraging discovery, excellence, innovation and joy.
8 Elements™ Intensive III: Culmination
With principled practice and high expectations at the center of our philosophy for all 8 Elements intensives, Phase III continues the refinement of what we’ve learned so far, and we turn our attention to collaborative project-based learning in the practice, adornment, and performance elements. Participants will create original collaborative dances and stage, light, and perform these in a professional theatre setting.
In addition to the regular daily technique and musicality training schedule with Rachel, you’ll receive expert instruction by guest teachers on specialized topics, performance at a professional theatre with staff and lighting design for our “Performance Lab,” professional quality video of your performance, rehearsal space, and a study guide for the intensive, all included in the registration price.
Culmination is where the 8 Elements™ training is applied to life experience in rehearsal and performance settings. Registration does not include testing fees, housing, transportation, & food.
Testing for Recognition and Certification
The 8 Elements™ intensives are intended as an approach for exploration and development of one's personal dance practice, with the opportunity to join a network of other practitioners and teachers who have displayed a degree of commitment and proficiency in the approach through testing for recognition at each phase and two culminating certifications: A Practitioner's Certification and a Teaching Certification.
The Practitioner's Certification will be offered for participants who complete Phases I - III and who satisfy the requirements and testing for each phase. The Teaching Certification will be offered after the completion of Phase IV, the Teacher Training phase and its requirements. Participants who complete all phases, projects, and testing, earning the Teaching Certification, will be certified to teach material from the 8 Elements Datura Style™ approach.
More information about Rachel Brice's 8 Elements™ method, and benefits of the Teaching certification can be found here.
Requirements for the Intensive
Completion of Phases I-II: Initiation and Cultivation, with testing and project requirements satisfied.
A minimum of 1 year of belly dance training.
English language proficiency in reading, writing, and speaking.
A willingness to work with others and actively participate in an intensive group setting.
The ability to dance at least 7+ hours per class day without injury.
Each participant must be at least 18 years of age.
Additional Pre-Intensive Requirements for Testing
We turn up the volume and ask a little more from you, knowing that with preparation you can handle it, and that you love to be pushed to the limit!
In preparation for Phase III: Culmination, if you are planning on testing for the Practitioner's Certification, we require you submit:
• Two (2) book reports to be turned in by the first day (no exceptions). Details after registration.
• There will also be nightly homework during the week of the intensive.
How to Prepare For Testing
The written test for Phase III will encompass all three intensives, so, in short, you'll be studying more than the previous two intensives combined. Be sure you know all the material in study guides I and II before you get here to ease the process.
The practical test will focus on technique, and to obtain a Practitioner's Certification, you will need to achieve an "advanced-intermediate" level of technique proficiency in several areas which may include, but is not limited to: zils, spins, vocabulary, strength, posture, focus, flexibility, balance, agility, stamina, timing, and musicality.
Details about scoring rubric for the practical exam will be provided during the intensive.
The fee for testing is separate than registration and will be $100. Registration for testing will be handled separately at the intensive.
Testing fees include administration of written and practical tests, and final project components. You will receive detailed final project evaluation with a certificate upon completion.
To complete Phase III and be eligible for Phase IV, Transmission, participants will have 3 months to complete a final performance project that clearly displays their understanding of all 8 Elements. This final project will be detailed at the intensive.

Airbnb.com: Many past Initiates have had success with airbnb.com. It connects people who have space to rent with people who perhaps want an alternative to a hotel. Kind of like timesharing. We can not recommend it per se as it is a listing sight but there are many reviews and it's worth a look.
The Everett Street Guest House: 2306 NE Everett St, Portland, OR. 97232. 503-230-0211. Email: firstname.lastname@example.org. Close to the studio and a favorite of past Cultivation attendees.
The Jupiter Hotel: 800 E Burnside, Portland, OR 97214. (503)-230-9200 | 877-800-0004. One of the closer hotels to the studio at less than .5 miles away and close to central Portland and downtown. It is a little rock n' roll so don't expect peace and quiet.
