The 8 Elements™ Approach Overview

The 8 Elements™ is a process-based approach developed by Rachel Brice. It is rooted in fusion, american tribal and american cabaret belly dance styles, other contemporary and ethnic dance forms, and viniyoga™.

The 8 Elements™ is a multi-phase training designed to impart a strong, creative and dynamic foundation to one’s belly dance practice, and as a way to complement and converse with the many belly dance styles. The intention of this student-centered approach is not to teach a set style of belly dance, but rather, seeks to explore the underlying architecture of many dance styles, honoring traditions, while encouraging discovery, excellence, innovation and joy.

8 Elements™ Intensive II: Cultivation

Cultivation, Phase II of the 8 Elements™ training, continues the focus on technique and creativity as engines for expression while expanding the dancer’s creative ‘toolbox’ for building a unique approach to vocabulary, musicality, adornment, improvisation, and choreography. This intensive goes deeper into the fundamentals of belly dance technique and yoga asana, exploring Rachel’s dance vocabulary, shared vocabularies, while practicing solo and group improvisation. Participants will create original combinations, expand proficiency in musicality and learn common arabic rhythms, and explore design for adornment. Initiation is an overview of a well-rounded dance practice, and in Cultivation the approach is advanced and refined to support the dancer’s process of development and discovery.

Cultivation is open to dancers who have completed Phase I, Initiation.

Testing for Recognition and Certification

Registration for testing is here.

The 8 Elements™ intensives are intended as an approach for exploration and development of one's personal dance practice, with the opportunity to join a network of other practitioners and teachers who have displayed a degree of commitment and proficiency in the approach through testing for recognition at each phase and two culminating certifications:  A Practitioner's Certification and a Teaching Certification.

The Practitioner's Certification will be offered for participants who complete Phases I - III and who satisfy the requirements and testing for each phase. The Teaching Certification will be offered after the completion of Phase IV, the Teacher Training phase and its requirements. Participants who complete all phases, projects, and testing, earning the Teaching Certification, will be certified to teach material from the 8 Elements Datura Style™ approach.

More information about Rachel Brice's 8 Elements™ approach is here and an FAQ can be found here.

Area Accommodations + Discounts

Rachel's studio is near the center of Portland on the east side of the river. The following is a list of places to stay. You can find additional hotel information from POVA (Portland Visitors Association). More information about fun activities and sights in Portland will be included with your registration.

Airbnb.com
: Many past Initiates have had success with airbnb.com. It connects people who have space to rent with people who perhaps want an alternative to a hotel. Kind of like timesharing. We can not recommend it per se as it is a listing sight but there are many reviews and it's worth a look.

The Everett Street Guest House: 2306 NE Everett St, Portland, OR 97232. 503-830-0650.  Email: info@everettstreetguesthouse.com. Close to the studio and a favorite of past attendees. Mention that you are with Datura and receive a 10% discount. Be sure book directly with the Everett Street Guest House to get the best rate:  You can book online at www.everettstreetguesthouse.com or by phone (503-830-0650).

The Jupiter Hotel: 800 E Burnside, Portland, OR 97214. (503)-230-9200 / 877-800-0004. One of the closer hotels to the studio at less than .5 miles away and close to central Portland and downtown. It is a little rock n' roll so don't expect peace and quiet.

Portland Hawthorne Hostel: 3031 SE Hawthorne Boulevard, Portland, OR 97214. (503) 236-3380. A 25 minute walk to the studio, in the middle of the happening Hawthorne district and private rooms from around $60-$75.

Portland Hawthorne Guesthouse‎: 1235 SE Salmon, Portland, OR 97214. (503) 233-1643. A 20 minute walk from studio and downtown and very close to Hawthorne. This economical guesthouse is no frills and serviceable.

The Eastside Lodge: 949 E Burnside, Portland, OR 97214. (503) 234-8411. Basic and somewhat urban/gritty accommodation, not recommended if you need more than basic 'rough' accommodation. 10 - 15 minute walking distance from the studio and very conveniently located to lots of eateries. Mention "Little Scarab" when booking by phone and receive 20% off the business rate.
