Event description

Description

In 1993, Dr. Cornel West published Race Matters, a book that became a national bestseller, selling more than half a million copies and earning widespread praise for its trenchant depiction of race in America, its unflinching critique of governmental and social policies around race issues, and its optimistic vision for race relations in the future. Newly republished in a 25th anniversary edition, with a new introduction by Dr. West, Race Matters is more than ever a book for our times. West’s prescient sense that “we are at a crucial crossroad in the history of this nation—and we either hang together by combatting these forces that divide and degrade us or we hang separately” could not be more relevant or more necessary in 2018.

Race Matters @ 25, our two-and-a-half day conference at Dartmouth this summer, will celebrate this book and the occasion of its 25th anniversary. Race Matters @ 25 is meant to bring together scholars and thought leaders from a variety of perspectives to think about the past and future of African-American and African diasporic studies at a crucial moment of debate and activism. The focus will be on unpacking historical legacies and discussing future lines of intellectual, social, cultural, and political engagement within the context of Race Matters and its continuing impact. We invite you to join us in what promises to be a lively, engaging, challenging, entertaining, and community-building event.
