Description

Dr Eilis Hannon is Senior Research Fellow in Bioinformatics based in UEMS. With a background in Mathematics she is a self-taught programmer using a combination of Unix, Python and R in her day-to-day work. She has been teaching introductory programming and bespoke workshops for more than 3 years. She is a Software and Data Carpentry certified instructor and therefore is experienced in providing courses tailored to efficiently teach researchers and academics the programming skills they require to improve their workflows.

This taster session will focus on providing attendees with an insight to the world of R. R is a programming language and software environment primarily focused on performing statistics, data analysis and visualisation. R is hugely popular with over 2 million users, with numbers increasing every year. It is freely available and has a wide range of possible applications. This taster session is designed to give attendees a taste of what R can do with participants getting hands-on experience of using R to explore real datasets. No previous experience of R or programming is required.

This workshop will cover:

  • An introduction to the R environment.
  • How to read in and output data.
  • Basic data manipulation.
  • Introduction to data visualisation.
  • Introduction to programming principles.
