Description

Come out to beautiful DeHaven Ranch in northeastern New Mexico and learn several techniques for erosion control and land rehabilitation while camping and getting amazing meals cooked for you. This workshop is funded by a grant from the United States Fish and Wildlife Service, Partners Program.

DeHaven Ranch is a place where several unique aquatic, riparian, and dry upland habitats converge in the Canadian River Watershed. http://dehavenpreserve.com/

6:00 PM Dinner is served.

FRIDAY

8:00 AM Breakfast

9:00 AM Welcome and Introductions

9:30 AM Regional and Ranch History (Stephanie and Lovato Family)

10:00 AM Introduction to the Canadian Watershed (Sean Lewis, NRCS)

10:30 AM Site visit to forested drainage (burned in 2016 Labor Day fire). Discussion Stop at destabilized spring – future project (Mark Reineke and Margie Tatro, Reineke Construction)

12:00 PM Lunch on Alamocita Creek

1:00 PM History and Habitat Walking Tour (Stephanie Brock & Lester Swindle, DeHaven Ranch and Mollie Walton, Quivira Coalition)

3:00 PM Seed ball hands-on instruction (Monica Pless, Quivira Coalition) and/or material staging (rock hauling and tree cutting) for Saturday’s work (Reineke Construction and CM ArborCare)

5:00 PM Return to HQ

6:00 PM Dinner

FOOD

All meals will be provided by DeHaven Ranch, starting with dinner on Thursday. Vegetarian options will be available at every meal. Quivira Coalition will provide morning and afternoon snacks. Bring your water bottles to fill with delicious DeHaven well water!



ACCOMMODATIONS/CAMPING

There are 2 single beds and 4 double beds available (dorm style) in the historic post office (first come, first served). Bring your own tent and bedding if you prefer private accommodation. Bring your own sleeping bags for sleeping spaces in the hayroom on this year’s alfalfa bales and in a shop area with mattresses.
