Event description

Description

Wait, what is second parent adoption? Do I really need to do a second parent adoption if we're already married? How much is this going to cost us and how long will it take? Join Attorney Brian Esser and Social Worker, Camilla Brooks, for a workshop that answers all your burning questions on second parent adoption in NYC. This workshop will shed light on the often daunting process for parents, expectant parents and those thinking about conceiving. Brian and Camilla will guide you through the steps in the process, legal costs and will be able to answer some of your specific questions.

Camilla Brooks, LCSW I am a Psychotherapist and Clinical Social Worker, licensed to practice in New York State. I have a private practice in the Chelsea section of Manhattan. I received my Masters of Social Work (M.S.W.) from New York University and also hold a Masters of Fine Arts (M.F.A.) from Columbia University. My approach to psychotherapy is eclectic and integrates several schools of practice, with a particular emphasis on trauma healing. I am a certified Somatic Experiencing Practitioner (SEP) and am certified in Clinical Hypnosis and EMDR. I am an EFT (Emotionally Focused Therapy)-trained couples therapist. I work with LGBTQ and heterosexual adult individuals and couples of all ages and racial/ethnic backgrounds. I am also an adoption specialist in New York working independently and with an agency affiliation. I have led workshops and trainings for parents and adoption professionals; and I am an adoptive mother. Learn more about Camilla here: http://www.camillabrooks.com/

Brian Esser As an adoptive dad, I know the options for building your family can seem overwhelming. You need a trusted advisor to help you step by step through the process. I will listen to your concerns and work with you to find the best way for you to build your family. And I can help you safeguard your family with proper planning for the future. After receiving a bachelor’s degree in History from Northwestern University, I earned a law degree from the American University Washington College of Law. I am licensed to practice law in New York, Illinois, Wisconsin and the District of Columbia. I concentrate my practice on adoption, reproductive law, and estate planning. I sit on the Board of Directors of the National LGBT Bar Association’s Foundation, and currently serve as Board Treasurer. I also volunteer at the Brooklyn Community Pride Center’s LGBTQ Brooklyn Legal Assistance Project. I am a member of the American Bar Association Family Law Section Committees on Adoption and Assisted Reproductive Technology, the New York City Bar, the Brooklyn Bar Association and LeGaL – the LGBT Bar Association of Greater NY. I have been recognized by my peers as a Super Lawyers Rising Star in 2011, 2012 and 2013. Learn more about Brian here: www.esserlawoffice.com

Small humans welcome!
Questions: queertransfamily@gmail.com

Each meeting will begin with one hour of structured time (workshop or facilitated discussion) led by birth experts in the community, followed by one hour of unstructured time for people to mingle, and get to know one another. Attendees are welcome to show up for the second hour only if they like (for example, if that month's topic isn't immediately relevant to their needs).

Please note: This group is intended to build community among those who identify as TSLGBTQIGNC* and are planning pregnancy or adoption, or already parenting. If you do not meet this description, we ask that you do not attend. If you are interested in helping to organize a separate series of classes for health care/birth workers to increase their cultural competency in caring for queer and trans families, please reach out to queertransfamily@gmail.com
