FAQs

What exactly is Contra?

Contra dance is a centuries-old New England folk dance tradition. It’s the rowdy red-headed stepchild of English country dance (the kind of dancing you see in Jane Austen movies). Contra dancing is done to live traditional fiddle music in a variety of styles, from lilting Celtic-inspired tunes to rollicking bluegrass. All dances are taught by a caller, who “calls out” instructions throughout the dance.

Are there ID or minimum age requirements to enter the event?

Absolutely not! All ages are welcome, and no ID required. All children must be accompanied by a supervising adult, but no one is required to participate in order to attend. Come enjoy the music, the friendship, and the community.

What are my transportation/parking options for getting to and from the event?

The 2nd Unitarian Church of Chicago is easily accessible from the Belmont Red/Brown/Purple line train, and the 8, 22, 36, and 77 bus routes. Parking in the area can be difficult, as the church has no parking lot so please plan accordingly. There is limited street parking, and metered parking in the area, but if possible consider car-pooling with a friend.

What can I bring into the event?

This is a community event. If you feel so moved, we encourage sharable finger-food snacks, but no one is obliged to bring anything. Make sure that you are wearing comfortable shoes that are easy to move in, and wear clothes that breathe and stretch. You're going to be dancing and working up a bit of a sweat! Skirts, dresses, and kilts are loads of fun to dance in (especially if you like to twirl!)

How can I contact the organizer with any questions?

We are best contacted via email at queercontrachicago@gmail.com or through Facebook message at http://m.me/queercontrachicago

Do I have to bring my printed ticket to the event?

Absolutely not. All necessary information is taken at the door. Just bring your smile, your shoes, and your love of music.
