Description

Queer@Queen’s 2017: Queer Sex? Now?

With guest speaker Holly Hughes

Brian Friel Theatre (Queen's Film Theatre)

20 University Square

10-11 November 2017 (Friday 1 - 5pm and Saturday 11 – 5pm)

As battles over Gay Marriage, AIDS, and government oppression of homosexuals rage around the world (and here in Belfast), the fight for basic rights and the discourse of normalisation have in many ways obscured the radical sexuality that characterised the gay liberation movement of the 1960s and 70s. In the quest for recognition and equality, the imperative stance for public consumption, that sexual preference is not really about sex but rather love and companionship, has meant that coming out of the closet has frequently been done in a more demure costume.

At Q@Q 2017, we are delighted to welcome performance artist Holly Hughes as we explore the frontiers of queer sexuality (and indeed all sexuality) at the present moment, both in the world and in aesthetic representation. How far can we push representations of queer sexuality in public? Is the overall push for equality worth a forced performance of prudity? And to what extent has that forced performance of prudity become ingrained in queer minds, creating a generation that views gay sex through a heteronormative lens whose morality may have little bearing on queer lives?
