The War for Talent: Finding and Hiring the People You Need

Virginia’s unemployment rate (2.6%) is the second-lowest since 1969. The single biggest issue for most small businesses is workforce. How does a leader of a small or mid-sized company compete for talent with large corporations? Where can you find the people with the skills you need?

Companies succeeding in finding talent are doing it in creative and systematic ways. We’ve assembled a diverse panel to share how they are staying ahead in the war for talent.

Program and Presenters

Jane Holmes, Head of People Services, RTS Labs

People are the most important element of RTS Labs. Jane drives the people strategy that has allowed RTS to grow dramatically over the past few years. Prior to joining RTS, she focused on hiring top talent for companies like CarMax, Capital TechSearch, Elephant, Target and Best Buy.

“I believe the best way to hiring top talent is by being diligent about what I call a "relationship-based" recruiting strategy. It has been the key to my success in my career and since joining RTS Labs.”


David Saunders
, Chief Idea Officer, Madison+Main

David leads Madison+Main, a brand communications agency that provides creative marketing solutions for emerging companies. If you’ve ever met Dave, even on social media, you know that he believes in the company mantra “Bold Brands Win.”

He has been successful in recruiting bold and talented people — Madison+Main-iacs — through highlighting a fun, innovative culture through social media, a highly successful internship program, a generous and creative benefits program, and strict adherence to flexibility in job descriptions.

Mark Smith
, Owner, Midas of Richmond

Mark owns and operates four Midas stores, including Short Pump which is the highest volume Midas in the entire system, at 5x the average Midas store.

Mark is well known for the way he and his business give back to the community, offering support and publicity for Virginia Blood Service, FeedMore and many other nonprofits.

Carrie Todd
, Senior VP, Entercom Media

Carrie is a native Richmonder, and graduate of VCU. She has spent her career in media sales.

Finding and hiring sales talent is a challenge upon which Carrie thrives. She leads a $20m sales team serving seven Entercom radio stations in the Richmond market.

"Our philosophy is looking for TALENT. Everything else can be taught -- tools, resources, products, etc. We are slow to hire, quick to fire."


Moderating the panel will be JJ White.

JJ has been a multiple franchise owner for Dale Carnegie Training for 19 years and works with companies throughout Virginia in the areas of talent development and employee engagement. As a business owner, he is in the trench of trying to find and hire the best sales talent to lead his team throughout the southeast US region. He’s past chairman of the VA Council of CEOs and has been a member for 9 years.
