About this event
Hello internet friends,
We’re trapped at home and you are also probably most likely trapped at home as well. So let's all get together, from the comfort of our own bunkers, and talk about something else for an hour. We invite an author in to talk about their work and answer questions from you, the audience.
About the author: Gregg Bernstein establishes user research practices for growing organizations, and wrote Research Practice: Perspectives from UX researchers in a changing field. He spends his days advocating for and practicing user-centered product development as lead user researcher for Webflow, and speaks around the world about his work at conferences and company events.
He built innovative research practices at Vox Media and Mailchimp, and taught design, branding, and typography at Georgia State University. In a previous life, he created album covers for punk and emo bands, and designed for clients in the music and advertising industries. Visit the archive.
About the book: This book is not an argument for doing user research. Nor is it a tutorial or toolkit for common methodologies. It won't show you how to run a usability session or recruit users remotely.
Research Practice captures the day-to-day of the practice of user research-what it looks like to work with peers and stakeholders, to raise awareness of research, to make tradeoffs, and to build a larger team. This book takes you inside the field of applied user research through the stories and experiences of the people doing the work. Each chapter explores a specific theme:
- Finding a way in
- Getting started in a new role
- Building momentum
- Sharing the work
- Expanding your practice
- Overcoming challenges
- Where to go next
If you're in school or considering a career switch, you'll learn what a job in user research might look like. If you're new to the field, you'll see where your career might go and know how to get there. And if you're expanding the size or reach of a practice, you'll understand how others have approached it.
Ticket price: $5. Cheap. We used to do events in person that required all of us to get in a car or plane. Now the planet is better off and you can participate from wherever you are. We guarantee you'll get more than $5 value out of it, and charging admission makes it more likely that the people who sign up plan to show up. We know these are uncertain times to say the least, so no one is turned away! Use code: BOOKFRIEND for a free ticket if you need to.
How does it work? We use Zoom. After you sign up you'll get an email with the access code. You don’t have to join with video, but it’s nice to see faces.
What if it totally sucks? You'll get your $5 back and we'll all have learned something.
