Event description

Description

Come join the physics department at the UofA to learn about quantum computing! Dr. Emile Hoskinson, Experimental Physicist at D-Wave Systems, will present an approachable and fun introduction to quantum computing with an emphasis on D-Wave's architecture. No physics background is needed.

Quantum computing is a technology that utilizes the principles of quantum physics to manipulate and store information. While the field is still in its infancy, with much of the research being done by academics in university and government labs, several companies have begun commercializing the technology. D-Wave Systems, based in Burnaby, British Columbia is a leader in this movement. In 2011 they produced the world's first commercially available quantum computer. Since then, several new generations of quantum computers have been built, with buyers including NASA, Google, and Lockheed Martin.

Afterwards, learn about the physics of superconductors and make liquid nitrogen ice cream! Join the GPSA in the lobby to participate in a variety of fun and exciting physics demonstrations.

The lecture will be held at the University of Alberta in the CCIS North Lecture Theaters, room CCIS 1-430. This is directly adjacent to Parking Lot E of the University of Alberta, which is accessed via Saskatchewan Drive NW (please see the address and linked map found at the top of this page for more detail).

This is the public lecture associated with the 2017 Symposium for Graduate Physics Research, an annual event that highlights the research of graduate students in physics at the UofA. The GPSA hosts this public lecture to communicate their passion for physics with the general public.
