Quantum computing to accelerate safety and efficiency of autonomous driving — Dr Jeewika Ranaweera

The self-driving vehicles are expected to improve road safety by analyzing the data gathered from onboard sensors and making the life or death decisions behind the wheel in a split-second. These decisions are made by processing data from a range of information, including the data from surrounding environment, from the vehicles in the vicinity, and from the route conditions. However, due to the number of factors to be considered and the complexity of

these tasks, the required computing capacity grow exponentially and take the conventional computers to their limits.

In order to make the autonomous cars a reality and to get the required performance boost, the industry is taking advantage of Quantum Computing (QC) where the quirky rules that govern quantum mechanics come into play. While the hardware needed to harness this is advancing rapidly, the car industry is exploring the enormous potential of QC to address the need for colossal amounts of computing power for data processing and wireless communication. In this talk, the wonderful world of "qubits" and the property of "entanglement" will be used to describe how QC improves both the safety and efficiency of autonomous driving. The numerous advantages of QC to optimize and to holistically solve the complex traffic flow and traffic congestion will be described. In addition, since the QC can break the cryptography, the security risks associated with autonomous vehicles will be addressed.
