The ACI-Houston Chapter cordially invites you and your colleagues to a full day of networking and learning. The morning session will focus on the causes and control of concrete cracking, why they happen and what to do about it.  The afternoon session will focus on the proper placement and finishing techniques used to achieve a desired look. There will be four 90-minute sessions as outlined below. Attendees will receive a certificate for 6 PDH attendance hours.

1. TITLE: Troubleshooting Concrete Cracks

DESCRIPTION: It is important to have a clear understanding of the types of cracks and how to minimize cracking. Cracks are caused by either structural loading or nonstructural effects. Attendees will learn the causes of structural cracks, mapping cracks, measuring cracks and tolerable crack widths. Other topics of discussion will include the causes of nonstructural cracks that occur before hardening (plastic shrinkage, plastic settlement) or after hardening (crazing, shrinkage, corrosion of embedded metals, alkali-aggregate reactions and early thermal contraction) and how to minimize them.

 OBJECTIVES: Attendees participating in this course will be able to:

  1. Analyze causes of structural cracks, mapping cracks & measuring cracks
  2. Identify causes of nonstructural cracks that occur before hardening
  3. Determine causes of nonstructural cracks after hardening
  4. Discuss how to minimize & various crack types

 2. TITLE: Repairing Concrete Cracks: Evaluation and Selection of Repair Methods

DESCRIPTION: Concrete cracks and that's a fact! Evaluation, selection of a repair procedure and, crack repair will be discussed. Attendees will learn how to choose the best repair procedure for different types of cracks and see how to make each repair. This seminar will cover various repair methods including routing and sealing, stitching, grouting, dry packing, gravity filling, epoxy injection, crack arresting, penetrating sealers, overlays and surface treatments.

OBJECTIVES: Attendees participating in this course will be able to:

  1. Evaluate how to choose best repair procedures for active & dormant cracks
  2. Summarize repair techniques for routing & sealing cracks
  3. Identify repair methods based on unique criteria
  4. Discuss stitching, grouting, dry packing, gravity filling, epoxy injection & surface treatments

3. TITLE: Proven Techniques for Quality Concrete Placement & Consolidation

DESCRIPTION:   In this seminar, attendees will learn how to properly place and consolidate freshly mixed concrete for slabs on ground, foundations, columns, and walls. Topics covered: pre-concrete placement inspection, how to deposit concrete on ground and in formwork, characteristics and application of internal and external vibrators, and proper techniques to vibrate slabs on ground, foundations, columns, and walls. Also covered will be consequences of improper vibration including honeycomb, bug holes, subsidence cracking, lift lines, and cold joints.

COURSE OBJECTIVES: Attendees participating in this course will be able to:

  1. Inspect subgrade or subbase and formwork prior to placing concrete
  2. Properly deposit freshly mixed concrete on ground and in foundation, column, and wall forms
  3. Consolidate concrete using internal vibration and a vibratory strike off screed
  4. Identify and understand effects of improper vibration

4. TITLE: As-cast Concrete Surface Finishes: Specifications, Defects and Repairs 

 DESCRIPTION: In this presentation, hear about common specified requirements for as-cast, architectural, smooth-rubbed and grout-cleaned rubbed finishes.   Learn about as-cast surface defects and anomalies including honeycomb, air voids or bug holes, sand streaking, offsets, and more. Dr. Basham will also discuss how to avoid and minimize surface defects and anomalies, repairs and ACI 347.3R-13 Guide to Formed Concrete Surfaces.

   COURSE OBJECTIVES: Attendees participating in this course will be able to:

  1. Specify the appropriate concrete surface finish in accordance with ACI 301
  2. Design a mockup that shows real expectations for the job
  3. Identify common surface anomalies and defects
  4. Minimize common surface anomalies and defects 

CREDENTIALS OF INSTRUCTOR: Kim Basham, PhD, PE, FACI 

Kim Basham, PhD, PE, FACI is a registered professional engineer and a seasoned instructor of many concrete seminars and short courses directed towards architects, engineers, and contractors across the United States and abroad. Prior to forming KB Engineering, he was senior structural engineer with Concrete Engineering Specialists LLC, Structural Services Inc., and Baker Concrete Construction Inc. Kim has served as Engineering Director for World of Concrete and Contributing Editor for Concrete Construction magazine and is the author of over one hundred published articles. He was also an Assistant Professor of Civil Engineering at University of Wyoming and Virginia Military Institute.

Kim specializes in construction techniques, concrete technology, repairs, forensic and design engineering. A member of the American Concrete Institute (ACI), American Society of Concrete Contractors (ASCC), the Concrete Society and the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), he has served as an expert witness of both in numerous litigation and arbitration cases. Kim holds a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering, Master of Science in Structural Engineering and a PhD in Civil Engineering. He currently serves as a technical consultant for the World of Concrete Education Program.
