Description

The STEM Cohort is designed to support selected K-12 schools in engaging students in a transdisciplinary approach to STEM, anchored in learning experiences that focus on the Science and Engineering Practices (SEP). Specifically, we would like to continue the work that the Field Support Center started in 2015, but deepen our understanding of the NYS Science Learning Standards and the STEM framework to emphasize problem solving.

Some of our goals this year will be to:

a) Engage teachers in five Engineering Design Process (EDP) professional learning sessions. These five sessions are centered on meaningful integration of STEM practices resulting in a shift in classroom practice towards lessons that increase student engagement with the SEPs, and help them to identify societal problems, develop, test and reach creative solutions. This will culminate in an authentic STEM project that will be exhibited during our annual STEM Share Fair.

b) Support cohort schools with leveraging the NYCDOE STEM Framework as a self-assessment tool and the introduction and initial adoption phases of the NYS Science Learning Standards for this school year.

Audience:

One or two of your Science/STEM teacher leaders. At least one teacher is encouraged to come to each of the five (5) sessions in the series.

STEM Share Fair

The STEM Cohort culminates with a STEM Share Fair where students share their prototypes and their journeys through the process.
