Concept-Based Mathematics- Teaching for Deep Understanding. Session 2

This series of professional learning will deepen the work of modifying and using rich tasks with success criteria by providing specific strategies for planning and implementing lessons that support conceptual understanding through problem solving and provide increased opportunities for agentic students to monitor their own understanding.

In this session participants will:

  • Develop strategies and procedures for tracking student mastery of the learning target throughout the lesson
  • Engage in strategies and routines for strengthening academic conversations and writing in mathematics

Structure: A five session series for each district. Each session will have a whole group component and a grade band (K-2, 3-5 and 6-8) break-out component.

  • In the whole group component, participants will engage in the learning in a simulated classroom setting with multiple opportunities to reflect and to connect to their own practice.
  • In the grade band component, participants will work with the new learning to practice and plan with opportunities for feedback.
  • The bridge to practice component will track specific implementation applications across the year.

Intended Audience: Principal designee-(preferably a grade leader, member of the PL committee or coach) one per school- it is recommended that the same person attends all the sessions and be responsible for leveraging the content and experiences of the sessions to build capacity within the school
