Event description

Description

Media and video are the new frontier in design technology and disciplines in North American theatre. Media Designers, A/V techs and programmers are in high demand, especially those who are already familiar with live theatre.

Qlab 3 is cheap, accessible and powerful, and is already the industry standard for audio control in most mid-sized and small theatres, and many larger venues. On top of its impressive audio systems, QLab 3 is also a versatile and powerful video control software and fast becoming the go-to software for many theatrical media designers.

In this practical workshop, Media and Lighting Designer Kathy Maxwell and award-winning Sound and Media Designer C. Andrew Mayer will cover the fundamentals of working with Qlab 3 for video, including:

  • Setting up a camera and interfacing it into a QLab 3 system.

  • Working with source files.

  • Manipulating geometries.

  • Programming cues.

  • Editing and effects.

  • Integrating Video and Audio

  • Networking multiple QLab 3 systems; this is a common situation in most theatres as the Sound Designer and the Media Designer will need to work simultaneously.

Learners will work in pairs at fully functional and licensed QLab 3 stations. The goal is to teach participants the core skills they will need to start working with QLab Video systems on A/V calls as technicians, as programmers in theatres and to get them started with the skills they need if they want to be designers.

This is a basic level workshop, but assumes a familiarity with the concepts of cuing and building cues. Unless it is specifically relevant to Video, this workshop will not cover the Audio aspects of QLab. This workshop assumes a basic familiarity with computers (QLab is native to Mac OS X and is not available on Windows).
