PRESENTED BY: the SOCIAL ENTERPRISE INSTITUTE and COMMON GOOD SOLUTIONS, with Brunswick St. Mission and Halifax Music Co-op:

JOIN US FOR AN INTIMATE Q&A SESSION WITH SOCIAL ENTREPRENEUR MARK BRAND.
Perfect for social entrepreneurs, restauranteurs, community builders and those working to fight poverty and food insecurity, this session will be an intimate Q&A where we'll get to sit down with Mark Brand to talk about the challenges he faced building over 7 enterprises in Vancouver, most of which address a local social issue such as poverty or food insecurity.

All proceeds go to supporting the Brunswick Street Mission, who provide a food bank, clothing bank and breakfast program to those in need on the Halifax Peninsula.

About Mark:

“There is nothing more invigorating than understanding how flawed you are and still believing you can do good,” says Mark Brand, a once Dartmouth resident, and now one of Vancouver’s most recognized and celebrated social entrepreneurs. A restaurateur and retailer, Brand (who has started over 7 companies) is best known for resurrecting the Save on Meats enterprise in the city’s downtown eastside - Canada's poorest postal code. Save on Meats had been a Vancouver landmark from the time it was originally founded in 1957, serving the local community with a butcher shop and lunch counter. Committed to making the store a true social enterprise, Brand created a token donation program that allowed the poorest to get access to healthy food. The store now employs over 65 workers, many of whom live in the community and struggle with employment barriers, and boasts a meal program that serves 450 people per day, seven days a week.

Brand recognizes the importance of building sustainable business models that build better communities. He believes in the impact of an unconventional solution, using our past to guide our future, food security, and baking social values into business models. Mark is also the co-founder of A Better Life Foundation, an organization dedicated to raising funds to put toward providing food security to those in need.

Mark has travelled around the world, has spoken throughout North America, and has also spoken for the world renowned TED Talks series. And now, he'll be sharing his insights with YOU, in and intimate Q&A setting at the Halifax Central Library - Lindsay Room on October 10th. Join us, by donation, to learn from Mark and his amazing journey.

What people are saying about Mark:

"Mark Brand is cool. During a well-attended public forum on improving our downtown, Mark spoke eloquently and honestly about what it means to be an entrepreneur who invests in his community and its residents, demonstrating that success and social enterprise can – and oftentimes should – go hand in hand. He lives it, he preaches it; he is it." - Halifax Mayor Mike Savage
