Summary:

The session will outline many of the key trends and issues which are driving heightened expectations for internal auditors. These include evolving practice guidance, operational risk assessment, organizational transformations, and other demands from key stakeholders. Understanding these external and internal challenges should help internal auditors respond to emerging risks and organizational challenges in an increasingly volatile environment. The session will also provide insights on current issues, and the state of the profession nationally and globally.  Contemporary thought leadership will include perspectives on talent strategies, analytics, combined assurance and corporate culture.  IIA services to assist auditors with these expanding needs will be highlighted including advocacy, training, certifications, and specialty audit groups.

The Presenter:

Robert Kuling is the 2016–17 chairman of The IIA’s North American Board of Directors. In his role, he provides direction for The IIA’s strategic plan in North America and oversees its implementation. Since 2001, Kuling has actively volunteered with The IIA, having served as a member of the Global Board of Directors and the Global Ethics Committee. He was also vice chairman of the North American Board of Directors and a district representative on the North America Chapter Relations Committee. At the beginning of his IIA service, he held a number of leadership roles with The IIA’s Saskatchewan Chapter, including president. Kuling chose “Craft Our Role” as his theme for his term as IIA North American board chairman. “It is a professional imperative that internal auditors create the role that is best for both our organizations and our own personal development and fulfillment,” he says. “Internal auditors should strive to become trusted advisers who offer foresight to our stakeholders. To fulfill our potential and offer the most value to our organizations, we can craft our role by developing our business acumen, building meaningful alliances across our organizations, practicing combined assurance, and continually upgrading our competencies.” With more than 30 years of professional experience, Kuling has been a partner with Deloitte in the Enterprise Risk Services group based in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, since 2014. He assists organizations with internal audit, compliance, and governance, as well as delivering insights on risk management, internal controls, regulatory compliance, fraud, and ethics. Prior to joining Deloitte, Kuling was the vice president of internal audit for Tervita, a North American environmental solutions provider based in Calgary. His other positions include chief audit executive for Viterra and director of audit services for Precision Drilling Corporation. He also held audit management positions with Farm Credit Canada and the Provincial Auditor of Saskatchewan. In addition to his two IIA designations, Kuling holds a Certified Quality Auditor (CQA) designation from the American Society for Quality. His education includes a Master of Business Administration and a Bachelor of Commerce, both from the University of Saskatchewan. As a key national spokesman for the internal audit profession with regulators, professional groups, training firms, and government organizations, Kuling has delivered numerous presentations, seminars, and workshops. Kuling is a public member of Certified Professional Accountants (CPA) Alberta Discipline and Appeals Tribunal and a faculty member of the Directors College that delivers training for corporate directors in Canada.
