Event description

Dictionaries are the most important data structure in Python. Knowing how they work, and how to use them, is crucial if you really want to master and understand Python data structures.

This course will show you not just what dicts are, but how, why, and where to use them. After taking this course, you'll be able to write code that is more "Pythonic," taking advantage of the many methods available for dictionaries, and techniques that people have developed over the years.

In particular, we'll discuss:

  • What are dictionaries?
  • How do I use them?
  • What are they good at? (And bad at?)
  • Dict implementation, and Python's hash function
  • Adding to dicts
  • Retrieving from dicts
  • Iterating over dicts
  • Different uses for dicts
  • Combining dicts with other data structures

The course is four hours long, and includes not just explanations and live coding, but also many exercises, as well as ample time for Q&A.

If you have been using Python for up to six months, you will come away from this course understanding why dicts are a big deal, and what the latest changes (in Python 3.6) mean to Python developers.
