Event description

Description

DNA pattern matching

This introductory lesson will explore how to compare strings of text against other (potentially much longer) strings of text. This is useful in a variety of areas, but we will explore it in the context of analyzing DNA patterns. By covering basic algorithms for working with text data, we will learn basic aspects of how DNA sequences are analyzed and compared. What does is mean to “find” a DNA pattern within a genomic sequence? How can we understand basic recursion and use it to count the occurrences of a DNA pattern in a sequence we are searching? What if we want our search algorithm to tolerate minor mismatches between our search string and our target string? Please come join us and find out!

Whether you know Python or if you've never programmed before, this will be a great workshop for beginners of ages 12 and up. We'll be sure that your coding experience will be a positive one!

Wine and snacks provided!
