PyCon Startup Row Pitch Event at Braintree HQ RSVP Now for FREE Admission
Tuesday, February 25, 2014 from 6:30 PM to 9:00 PM (CST)
Join the Chicago Python community on February 25th at 6:30pm for an evening mashup of Python and Startups.
We will start the evening with networking, food, and beer. Braintree providing nourishment. I'm checking with Lagunitas to get sponsorship of the event. (2/17/14, Lagunitas confirmed as beer sponsor)
We have a new beer sponsor in addition to Lagunitas to be announced.
Next up, we will have startups giving 5-minute elevator pitches to a select panel of judges, with live voting from the audience. The lucky winners will be awarded a free booth in Startup Row at PyCon 2014 in April. PyCon this year will convene in the beautiful city of Montréal.

Joining us on the judging panel will be Jeremy Smith founder of SpotHero, Stephanie Bell of Braintree, and Brian Ray organizer of ChiPy the Chicago Python user group, Chris Molnar the CTO of Pear, and Michael Vasquez, Ph.D., Founder of Tribal Science (www.tribalsciences.com).
A few spots open for pitching startups -- please contact us with your one-liner description before 5pm Friday! Email firstname.lastname@example.org to for consideration for a pitching spot.
Breaking news (2/21/2014) I'm going to switch the pitch and allow women and minority entrepreneurs who have concepts but haven't been able to connect with developers to launch to make a pitch at the event. Ariana Vargas will be joining us. Ariana has been at GiveForward working on cancer funding campaigns. Through this she learned that many cancer patients have a hard time connecting with resources available to them. She wants to apply her knowledge of this space to a resource for cancer patients.
Ideal candidates will have a deep knowledge of a market or customers. I'd prefer concepts that don't apparently scale along the lines of Paul Graham's maxim of build things that don't scale. Particularly interesting are niche markets that are underserved currently.
Here's a link to my personal blog as to why providing an opportunity to women and minority entrepreneurs is important to me, it's very personal but I feel good about sharing this with this community. http://sheu.com/
I have spots for two more entrepreneurs. (2/25/2014, spots are full, if you're an entrepreneur in need of resources please introduce yourself to me, I'll see what I can do). Please contact me with interest and nominations.
Braintree is our generous host, located on the 4th Floor, Suite 455, of 111 N Canal St, Chicago, IL 60606
Coming, Uber discount code for the night!
When & Where
I'm on staff for PyCon where I'm helping with Startup Row. I and my co-organizer and friend Yannick Gingras are feverishly putting on six events in six North American cities to publicize this great benefit for early stage startups. Last year my company ThreeMice was on Startup Row. It was a great experience where we passed out brownies from Delightful Pastries in Chicago at PyCon in Santa Clara and I dressed as Kim Jong-il to get PyCon attendees attention.
I thought I'd contribute to this year's Startup Row so other early stage companies can benefit from my experience.
My day job is ThreeMice where my co-founder Brian Ray and I are changing how engineers find jobs. We're doing this by attacking the UX of a job search and candidate sourcing and reducing friction for everybody involved in the hiring process.
