Event description

Description

Presenter: John Marshall

It couldn’t happen here, or could it? Wenatchee residents have viewed the destruction of Santa Rosa, California and Fort McMurray, Alberta on TV. While we have been bitten by fire, the concept of large sections of whole towns burning to ashes seems remote, but is it? In fact, we are vulnerable, as are all western cities. This class explores the components that could drive a catastrophic fire in Wenatchee, and what we can do to mitigate our risk.

John Marshall is a Wenatchee based photographer, with a master’s degree in Wildlife Resources with a particular interest in wild fire ecology (how plants and animals relate to the environment shaped by fire). That interest led him to examine how humans are affected by fire. The realization that wildfire threatens his own home, caused him to address concerns on his property and to involve neighbors. Marshall has been a lecturer for Humanities Washington, and a contract photographer to the U.S. Forest Service and the The Nature Conservancy on wildfire related projects. wildlandnw.net
