Event description

Description

“These conversations are always so tense, so painful. People are defensive. We want to believe we are good. To face the racisms and prejudices we carry forces us to recognize the ways in which we are imperfect. We have to be willing to accept our imperfections and we have to be willing to accept the imperfections of others. Is that possible on the scale required for change?” -Chris Rock

As Fort Worth recovers from the recent protests that emerged after a viral video showing a white officer wrestling a black mother to the ground, more community groups are clamoring for the implementation of community policing programs to help drive change. Jacqueline Craig, the mother arrested after calling the police to report a possible assault against her 7-year-old son, later said she would, “teach her children not to lose faith, because with police officers, as with all human beings, you have some good and some bad.” Students in our Writing for the Soul Workshop ™ are learning that their are many more good cops than what they thought.

Above, is a picture from our Writing for the Soul Workshop ™ at Metro Opportunity High School earlier this month. We challenged the students and Fort Worth Police Officers to share their individual stories. Sharing our experiences allows others to “walk a mile in our shoes” and better understand the lens by which we gauge the effectiveness of our police and our own personal safety. During certification, you will have the option for your story to be published in the book, Walk a Mile In My Shoes. Set for release Summer 2017.

As the developer of Writing for the Soul Workshop ™, our goal is to go deeper by offering Putting the Neighbor Back in the 'Hood' Certification to all those whose jobs puts them in direct contact with students in Fort Worth. Concerning Community Policing Programs here in Fort Worth, we believe the kids are the missing link. Our Putting the Neighbor Back in the 'Hood' Certification is the same training we offer in our Accelerated Program for Readiness Interaction & Leadership (A.P.R.I.L.) to mentors so they can effectively impact and empower students attending Writing for the Soul Workshop ™.

During this certification, you'll learn:

• Ways to revitalize and restore individual self- esteem and purpose and return individuals to a sense of belonging and respect in the community.

• Ways to encourage self-sufficiency and less on government assistance.

• Ways to educate and empower individuals to sustain morally and financially in the community.

• How to establish collaborative relationships with Rehabilitation centers and Behavioral Health Institutions

• How to collaborate with schools and parents to address school violence concerns and implement positive supports.

• Emotional Intelligence

• Culture Diversity
