Event description
Learn how to play tambourine, shaker and more percussion instruments AND do it well while singing.

About this Event

"When I'm standing on stage and not singing, what should I do?"

Our first inclination is to pick up a shaker or tambourine to keep busy. Great idea. These percussion "toys” are indeed instruments, and there is a proper way to play them. "Percussion for Singers" will show you how to make music and groove with your bandmates. When you can add something extra to make the band sound better, you add value to yourself as a pro singer. Bandleaders will take notice and appreciate it, too!

In this workshop, you will learn:

*How to analyze songs and tempos

*Recognizing when there is a need for percussion

*Choosing the appropriate instrument to play

*Basic rhythm patterns for each instrument

*Microphone awareness

*Appropriate use in rock band versus acoustic settings

*How to incorporate percussion into your singing style

This class is specially designed for live performers interested in learning the basics of hand percussion for rock and pop bands. The class teaches very simple, yet effective techniques in playing hand percussion instruments (tambourine, shaker, cowbell, guiro, etc)

Led by Celia Chavez as part of the Empowered Singer Workshops series.

CELIA CHAVEZ is a master harmonizer, dynamic vocal coach and accomplished songwriter.

Having seasoned her skills and her craft while singing and playing percussion with major artists including Melody Gardot, Julia Fordham and studying percussion with Butch Norton, Celia currently tours internationally with Enrique Iglesias as backup singer and romantic duet partner. You can catch her joining the rhythm section on the songs "Hero" and "I Like It."

As an artist, Celia has released five recordings to date as a performing songwriter and bandleader and is the female half of singer/songwriter duo Petty/Chavez. Her activity in her hometown Seattle’s music scene led to an invitation to join the Seattle Composers Alliance as a board member. This sparked her desire to be of service to her fellow musicians, so she helped galvanize the professional composer community into a resource for networking, career guidance, and focused, relevant workshops. During this time, Celia broke into the studio session world, co-wrote songs for film, and arranged harmony vocals on fast-paced recording sessions for radio IDs and commercials. Her relocations to New York City and Los Angeles grew her career as a touring backup singer , percussionist and studio session vocalist. Today, Celia joins forces with fellow singer Felice Hernandez to host the Empowered Singer Workshops series based in Los Angeles.

Celia is thrilled to share her joy and passion for harmony and percussion as well as her knowledge and experience of how it works.
