Putting Color on Silk

Tuesday, January 16, Wednesday, January 17, & Thursday, January 18

9am – 4pm (all three days)

Instructor: Neal Howard

$220 WGGC members / $245 non-members

Skill Level: All welcome

Class Limit: 15 (minimum/5)

Materials Fee: $40 includes acid dyes, vinegar, sodium alginate, synthrapol, vinyl gloves, and selection of silk fabrics for samples

Use Lanaset/acid dyes and several surface design techniques to apply wash fast color to commerically woven silk fabrics for visual complexity. Fold and clamp, stencil, stamp, brush, dip, and pour dye on to finished silk scarves or cloth to incorporate into another textile project. Layer techniques and hues for striking results. The product of this workshop can be incorporated into the Nuno Felting Workshop with Liz Spear in March.

Participants need to bring:

  • 2-6 yards silk fabric
  • dust mask
  • apron
  • seven (7) containers with lids for dyes
  • scissors
  • lunch and beverages (a refrigerator and microwave are available for use)
  • Optional: brushes, stencils, stamps, rubber bands, small clamps, etc.

Note: The workshop will be held upstairs at the Guild and is not handicapped accessible.

About the instructor: Neal Howard has been a professional weaver and dyer of silk yarns since 1989, working with woven shibori for the past 10 years. Color theory study, educational presentations, dyeing and weaving demonstrations all fuel her passion for the fiber arts. Neal is a member of the Southern Highland Craft Guild, Piedmont Craftsmen, and Carolina Designer Craftsmen. She enjoys bringing a sense of adventure and humor to the classroom. Cancellation Policies Regarding Student Fees

  • If teacher or Guild cancels workshop – full refund to all registered and cancelled students. Generally, the teacher or the Guild may cancel the workshop three (3) three or more weeks before the workshop start date. This is stipulated in the contract but can be flexible if both parties agree.
  • If a registered student wishes to cancel, s/he must:
    • Contact the Workshop Chair
    • If canceling thirty (30) or more days before workshop start date, student receives a refund of the workshop fee minus a $50 cancellation fee.
    • Cancel twenty-nine (29) or fewer days before the workshop start date
      • Refund workshop fee minus $50 cancelation fee only if vacant spot is filled by another person (from waitlist or otherwise).
      • No refund if spot remains vacant.
  • Registered student may independently find someone to take his/her place at the workshop with no extra fees involved as long as no cancellation is performed through EventBrite. Workshop Chair MUST be notified. In this situation, the primary registered student is responsible for all fees, passing on information to their replacement, etc.
