Steeped in the cultural histories of San Francisco’s African American and Filipino communities, Raissa Simpson’s Push Dance Company premieres Bitter Melon, May 25-28, 2012 in Union Square, downtown San Francisco. It features 3D video projection by Ben Wood and his collaborator David Mark onto the historic Dewey Monument. Performed by Push Dancers, the collaborative piece highlights interactions with vibrant video and sound. Uncovering the hidden realities of these parallel cultures, this new performance cracks open questions to the contradictions of life: national and cultural identity, natural disaster and war - the power of loss and redemption. Co-presented by San Francisco Arts Commission, Union Square Live, SF Recs and Parks, Zellerbach Family Foundation.

Made possible by San Francisco Arts Commission, Zellerbach Family Foundation, Union Square Live, SF Recreation & Parks, Terra Gallery and Event Venue, SFSU Dance & Music Dept., Alonzo King Lines Dance Center/ 3D Performance Workshop
